For people who use iPads as a secondary device, it’s a huge convenience. My favorite thing about the Satechi Slim X1, when compared to Apple’s own Magic Keyboard, is the ability to quickly switch between three devices. I’ve used the Slim X1 heavily for three weeks, between three different devices, with the backlight set to Level 3 most of the time, and I’ve only had to charge it once. Satechi says that the total standby time is 13 days, and the total working time is 45h of usage. Once fully recharged, the red charging light will turn green. Recharging the Slim X1 via the USB-C connection takes about 2-3 hours. The Power indicator light (above the Eject key) will flash green when the keyboard is low on battery. Once the keyboard reaches low battery levels of less than 15%, the backlight will turn off. If there’s been no activity on the keyboard for 30 minutes, then the unit will enter sleep mode. After three minutes of inactivity, the backlight will turn off to preserve battery life. The backlight will decrease to Level 1 if no keys have been pressed after one minute. Here is how Satechi reports battery life relating to the Slim X1’s various backlight levels: Of course, the integrated backlight is one of the biggest draws on the battery. It’s a shame that Apple doesn’t offer its own first-party keyboard with modern conveniences, because I feel like they’d sweat the smaller design details third-party companies like Satechi tend to miss. When set at higher brightness levels, the backlighting tends to bleed around the edges of the keys, which makes the keyboard look unkept when compared to the backlit keyboards found on Apple’s latest MacBooks. Unfortunately, the unit lacks an ambient light sensor for automatic backlight brightness adjustment, a feature seen on M1 MacBooks, and third-party offerings like the Logitech MX Keys, but the backlight’s 10 levels of brightness can be controlled directly via two buttons in the keyboard’s shortcut row. One of the biggest benefits of the Satechi Slim X1 is its backlit keys, a feature that’s still not available on Apple’s wireless Bluetooth keyboards. Unfortunately, the unit doesn’t feature the handy T-style arrow key layout, instead opting to go with the layout used on Apple’s Magic Keyboard. There are shortcuts for adjusting display brightness, invoking Spotlight search, CMD+Tab interface, and transport controls for interfacing with music playback. Like the Magic Keyboard and other Apple-centric third-party offerings, the X1 includes shortcut keys that are intended to be used with macOS and iPadOS. That’s not to say that the key response on the Slim X1 is bad, but I personally prefer the tack-sharp feedback of the keys on the Magic Keyboard. Unlike the pithy response that you feel on your fingertips when typing on the Magic Keyboard, the Slim X1 feels noticeably softer and forgiving in nature. The biggest difference between the Magic Keyboard and the Slim X1, and perhaps the one that could be a difference-maker for some users, is the way the keys feel when pressed. Using the Slim X1 made me appreciate the relatively low maintenance white keycaps found on Apple’s Magic Keyboard. The Slim X1 is also a hair wider than the Magic Keyboard, with slightly larger bezels.Īlthough I like the look of the space gray anodized aluminum paired with the black keycaps, I quickly remembered how much black keys show fingerprints, grease, and dust. For example, the function keys at the top of the unit are smaller to accommodate slightly larger primary keys than you’ll find on the Magic Keyboard. That being said, the Satechi Slim X1 is not a 1:1 Magic Keyboard clone. However, because the Slim X1 feels similar to Apple’s Magic Keyboard, it didn’t take long before typing on it felt natural. Subscribe to 9to5mac on YouTube for more videos Similar, but differentĪs someone who normally uses the Keychron K2 mechanical keyboard for day-to-day typing tasks, the Satechi Slim X1, with its scissor-switch low-profile keys, is a big departure from what I’m normally used to. 1/20/2024 0 Comments Facebook pages okra grillGeorgetown / Pawleys Island SC Restaurant Map.Beaufort / Bluffton / Hilton Head SC Restaurant Map.Tip: Place a colander with wide holes over a large bowl to "sift" the breaded okra from the flour before frying. Multi-planar lug which can only be enjoyed by the owner looking head on at the lugs. THIS is one facet of the case design that I absolutely adore. This is both a bane and a boom, as this watch will never be identified immediately as a Chrono Master, whereas one can spot a Grammer of Design GS/KS a mile away. The Chrono Master case feels blockier and will not feel out of place among watch designs today. Just like the 45 KS, this Chrono Master, is a well made watch and its quality shines through in every way.Īs mentioned earlier, the case design is more contemporary and muscular compared to the angular and planar design of Seiko’s Grammer of Design watches. Nevertheless, in my honest opinion, both Citizen and Seiko set out to make the finest watch that they are capable of to compete with the Swiss powerhouses in the past, and both of them succeeded. Also the case shape of the Citizen is more contemporary compared to Seiko’s Grammer of Design cases, but the influences of Seiko’s Grammer of Design on the Chrono Master case (or perhaps it’s the other way around?) are undeniable. For example, the hands and hour markers of the Chrono Master also has a black line running down their center, exactly like that of Seiko’s GS and KS. I am under no false impression that Citizen and Seiko did not share many of the same design cues in their high end watches. However, let’s get the white elephant out of the way. I could also tell from its pristine condition that this baby was not abused or even worn very much since it was released from the Citizen Factory! It was not better or worse than the KS, just different in its way. However I had a huge WOW feeling when I handled this Citizen Chrono Master in person. By chance, I had the opportunity to collect it on his behalf and basically handled it for a good 30 minutes before I handed it back to its rightful owner.īy then, I had handled my fair share of vintage KS, including the 45 KS which I blogged about recently. Some time in late 2015, my contributing author, Jude, bid and won on YJ a Citizen Chrono Master. I have kept an eye out for them but have not really seen any for sale in Singapore and my attention was still focused on Seiko 4S watches at that time. Stumbling on Stephen’s blog some years back was the first that I have ever known that Citizen came out with high grade watches, competing directly with Seiko in the same target market. We have also been corresponding with regards to my Chrono Master and he has been very forthcoming in sharing his expertise and knowledge for all Citizen related information. I need to first thank Stephen of the for his excellent article which is probably the most comprehensive go-to location for all details on the Citizen Chrono Masters which anyone can find on the web today. A likely reason for this is because Seiko not only continued its focus on high end mechanical watches today, but it likely produced many more variety of watches between its 2 companies in the past which led to much greater diversity of vintage Seikos and hence recognition among watch collectors today. Nevertheless, Seiko’s offerings, namely the Grand Seiko and King Seiko, are hugely more renowned and popular these days compared to that of the Citizen and Orient high grade watches. Citizen had its Chrono Master range of watches and Orient had their Royal Orient range of watches that were on par with whatever Seiko had to offer at the top of its range. In the 60s and 70s, Seiko was not the only Japanese watch company capable of producing watches capable of competing with the Swiss timepieces. 1/19/2024 0 Comments Ostrich predators and enemiesThis is not the case as in nature you need to adapt or die. Big Bird wouldn't be able to move very fast. With its large body you would think that Mr. South African Ostrich Leg and Toe Adaptations This behaviour has lead to the myth that ostriches bury their heads in the sand, which is not actually the case. They press their necks into the ground to be less visible. Ostriches cleverly use their necks to help them hide from predators. This neck of male and female ostriches have no feathers, only a thin layer of soft down. The ostrich also has a long neck which also helps to spot predators. Although this means that they are not the smartest creature on the savanna, they are able to see long distances and have great location awareness. Interestingly enough, ostriches have eyes that are bigger than their brains. Other animals, especially zebra and other antelope, also use this adaptation and can often be found grazing near to an ostrich to take advantage of their early predator warning skills. This amazing adaptation enables these birds to see predators, such as lions, from far away. The South African ostrich has the largest eye of any land animal, measuring almost five cm (2 inches) across. Amazing Adaptations: Ostrich Eyes and Necks Their wings can span up to two metres and gives them stability and better manoeuvrability when running. South African ostriches also use their feathers and wings as “rudders” to help them change direction while running. Ostrich males use their feathers for communication, especially during mating and to warn competition. When it is cold, ostriches flatten their feathers to improve their insulation and conserve body heat. This cools the body temperature of the ostrich. To do this ostriches contract their muscles which raises their feathers from their bodies and increases the air space next to their skin. The feathers of the South African or common ostrich can be used to help the birds cool down. The structure of an ostrich feather is different to flying birds which have tiny hooks to lock them together during flight. Adult male ostriches have black and white feathers while females and juveniles have grey-brown and white feathers.Īs ostriches are unable to fly, their feathers are adapted to help them regulate their temperature. The video focusses on ostrich feathers and mentions some of their amazing adaptations. The Pinta was square rigged and smaller than the Santa Maria. It was later rebuilt for use by Christopher Columbus. The origin of the ship is disputed but is believed to have been built in Spain in the year 1441. Thus, the Pinta, like the Nina, was not the ship's actual name. By tradition Spanish ships were named after saints and usually given nicknames. The owner of the ship allowed Martin Alonso Pinzon to take over the ship so he could keep an eye on the ship. The Quintero brothers were ship owners from Palos. The owner of the Pinta was Cristobal Quintero. The New World was first sighted by Rodrigo de Triana on the Pinta on October 12, 1492. La Pinta (Spanish for The Pint (liquid measure), The Look, or The Spotted One ) was the fastest of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus in his first transatlantic voyage in 1492. The Nina logged at least 25,000 nautical miles (46,000 km) under Columbus' command. In 1501, she made a trading voyage to the Pearl Coast on the island of Cubagua, Venezuela, and no further log of her is found in historic archives. She was lying in wait at Santo Domingo in 1500. In 1498, she returned to Hispaniola as advance guard of Columbus' Third Voyage. He stole a boat, rowed back to the Nina, and made sail, returning to Cadiz. The Captain, Alonso Medel, escaped with a few men. She was captured by a pirate corsair when leaving the port of Cagliari and brought to Cape Pula, Sardinia. The Nina was then chartered for an unauthorized voyage to Rome. She was the only ship to survive the 1495 hurricane, returning quickly to Spain in 1496. In September 1493, the Nina joined a grand fleet of 17 ships for the second voyage to Hispaniola, becoming the flagship for an exploration of Cuba. On the first voyage to America, the crew of the Nina slept on the deck but adopted the use of hammocks after seeing Native Americans utilizing them. The Nina reached Lisbon, Portugal, on March 4, 1493, and arrived in Palos de la Frontera on March 15, 1493. On February 14, 1493, in the east of the Azores, a storm threatened to capsize the Nina, and at Columbus' instigation, he and the crew took a series of vows to perform certain acts including religious pilgrimages upon their return to Spain. Landfall was made in the Bahamas at dawn on October 12, 1492. They left Palos de la Frontera on August 3, 1492, stopping at the Canary Islands on August 12, 1492, and continued westward. On Columbus' first expedition, the Nina carried 24 men, captained by Vicente Yazez Pinzin. It was greatly surpassed in size by ships like the Peter von Danzig of the Hanseatic League, built in 1462, 51 m (167 ft) in length, and the English carrack Grace Dieu, built during the period 1420 1439, 66.4 m (218 ft) in length and weighing between 1,400 tons and 2,750 tons. The Nina, like the Pinta and Santa Maria, was a smaller trade ship built to sail the Mediterranean sea, not the open ocean. Often said to have had three masts, there is some evidence she may have had four masts. There is no authentic documentation on the specifics of the Nina's design, although Michele de Cuneo, who accompanied Columbus on his second voyage, mentioned that the Nina was "about 60 toneladas" (60 tons), which may indicate a medium sized Caravel of around 50 feet (15 m) in length on deck. She was originally lateen sail rigged caravela latina, but she was re-rigged as caravela redonda at Azores with square sails for better ocean performance. The other ships of the Columbus expedition were the caravel-type Pinta and the carrack-type Santa Maria. However, she was commonly referred to by her nickname, La Nina, which was probably a pun on the name of her owner, Juan Nino of Moguer. As was tradition for Spanish ships of the day, she bore a female saint's name, Santa Clara. La Nina (Spanish for The Girl) was one of the three Spanish ships used by Italian explorer Christopher Columbus in his first voyage to the West Indies in 1492. Pinta is available for private parties and charters. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel and offers larger deck space for walk-aboard tours and has a 40 ft air conditioned main cabin down below with seating. Pinta was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. We are a floating museum, and we visit ports all over the Western Hemisphere. That ship was last heard of in 1501, but the new Nina has a different mission. Columbus sailed the tiny ship over 25,000 miles. The Nina and Pinta Historically Accurate Columbus Replica Ship The Nina is a replica of the ship on which Columbus sailed across the Atlantic on his three voyages of discovery to the new world beginning in 1492. |
